Vaccinations probably not the culprit in the rise of autism

The Danish Epidemiology Science Center in Arhus checked more than 500,00 records of children in their country to see if there was a correlation between vaccinations (for measles, mumps and rubella) and autism. A scientist with the CDC in Atlanta was a co-author. Other reasons for the increase in cases of autism may be explained by better diagnostic testing and/or environmental problems.

Yep, saw that in the NYT, was happy. Still under review; seems like duelling studies "prove" one side or the other every couple of years. At any rate, the main culprit if there is oen seems to be thimiserol, which is the preservative rather than the vaccine itself, and that is being phased out.

Right. It's part of the solution that is injected, but is not the vaccine itself.

It might be that a small % of patients do become autistic following vaccinations.

If you've never seen it, go to www.thedoctorwithin.com and read the chapter on vaccines, facinating!

I don't want to dismiss alternative medicine out of hand -- a lot of the ideas are valid -- but I don't buy the vaccine-autism connection, after a LOT of research.

This is in fact one of my biggest frustrations with a parenting board I frequent, that a disturbingly high percentage of the parents there do not vaccine their kids. I think this is irresponsible and possibly downright dangerous.

As a practicing pharmacist I saw a good number of
kids with ADDH, whose parents had a history of drug
abuse - but never have I heard of a case of a child
becoming autistic due to preventitive innoculations
that save the lives of countless thousands of kids
every year. It is irresponsible and thoughtless to
disregard so many, many years of study, research
and testing both for safety and efficacy of the
manner of becoming immune to diseases that
often did cause some serious complications in
children in history, but no one who is a parent
today realizes this - because they have not
lived through these diseases themselves, or
have never seen the devastation wreaked upon
kids before these immunizations were available.
