My mother's father fought in two world wars, I have fantastic stories of his bravery.

My dad had big guns on his supertankers in the Merchant Marines during the WW2 and my great great great grandfather on my mother's side was in the Ohio cavalry for the Union during the Civil War.

The draft was dropped so I never had to enlist, just sign up for the draft.

Honestly, I am not fit to fight in a war but I would volunteer to help on the side of liberty and freedom any other way I could.

I always knew I was not fit to fight in combat, so I enlisted into the USAF. I knew enlisted men/women served as support for the fliers who did the real fighting. It was the best decision I could have made at that time, because I didn't have any training or skills, and jobs were hard to find in the late 1950s. Have you heard of Desmond Doss? He was a man of his convictions, and refused to carry a weapon while in the service. Many of his commanders and soldiers picked on him, ridiculed and insulted him, and pretty much made his life miserable in the army. To make a long story short, he is the only soldier who won the Medal of Honor for his bravery without engaging in combat, but saving many soldiers lives in the field of combat as a medic. The book is called Hacksaw Ridge.
