@georgeob1,

Just prior to the reunification of Germany, the Eastern GDR socialist system produced the Trabant, a tiny automobile with a plastic body and a two cycle reciprocating engine - a highly polluting version of a primitive lawn mower. West Germany produced Mercedes Benz, BMWs and Audis.

Doesn't Germany have a single payer, government run health care system?

Opponents of the government getting involved in healthcare like to mention Eastern Europe, but what about Western Europe? They live longer than us, for one thing.

@Blickers,
There is much more to life expectancy then who pays for your medical bills. It's also a question of how well you take care of yourself and medical technology can only do so much after you have damaged your body. Drug abuse, food abuse and other such nasty habits take a toll on the body and people should be taking responsibility for their choices instead of blaming their govt for not paying for the health care.

The GDR had it during the period of its existence.
We had and have since since 1883 a different system: a multi-payer health care system with mandatory health insurance companies as well as private insurers.

A government-run healthcare system is where the government owns the hospitals, and doctors and nurses are government employees. There are no medical bills to speak of. Going to the hospital is a lot like going to the Department of Motor Vehicles. America's VA hospitals are run this way.

A "single payer" system is where doctors and nurses run their own businesses and bill for their services, and the government pays all the medical bills as if they were a giant insurance company. America's Medicare system is run this way.

The German system has lots of independent insurance companies competing against each other in a regulated marketplace. America's Obamacare exchanges are run this way.

@MontereyJack,
At least about the situation in Germany he's correct:
German Federal Medical Assaciation wrote:
Healthcare in Germany is funded by a statutory contribution system that ensures free healthcare for all via health insurance funds. Insurance payments are based on a percentage of income, shared between employee and employer.

Health care is financed mostly from the premiums paid by insured employees and their employers. Tax revenue surpluses also contribute. This is different from state health care systems such as those found in Great Britain or Sweden, where health care is financed by tax revenue. In market-oriented systems such as that in the United States, people have to carry the costs of treatment and loss of earnings themselves, or have to get private health insurance.

My definitions are strictly from reality, and bear no relation to the way delusional liberals refer to anything and everything as "single payer" even when referring to completely different systems.

@camlok,
Sweden and Iceland also run their health care systems this way. Does that mean Sweden and Iceland are gigantic communist organizations?

I do agree that the Communists were murderous thugs however. That is why we had to do everything that we possibly could in order to prevent the Soviets from conquering us.

No, they are socialist democracies. Part of the generous group of countries who actually deliver foreign aid instead of stealing and raping and pillaging poor countries as the tight ass USA does.

Stalin was, but all US presidents have been murderous thugs, purveyors of genocide, terrorists, thieves of gigantic proportions, ... .

You're being logically inconsistent. In the case of the US military, you said that having such a health care system was linked to communism in your view. How come other places with such a health care system are not linked to communism in your view?

Falsely accusing me of your own delusions will not change the reality that you so bitterly despise.

@hawkeye10,
Camlok is JTT.

EDIT: And he still responds with nothing but namecalling if you disagree with his claims that the US is the root of all evil.

EDIT2: Although he has branched out into 9/11 conspiracy whackery since he last posted as JTT.

First of all, any time anyone contradicts you, you respond with childish name-calling.

No offense, but that doesn't make for interesting discussion. Maybe if I were interested in name-calling to blow off steam it would be different, but I'm not interested in that.

Second, as I recall, I made a post that actually explained the questions that were being asked in the 9/11 whackaloon thread. No one answered, but they stopped asking the questions for a page or so. Then they started right back up asking the same questions and saying that no one could answer them. At that point I didn't see any reason to continue in the thread (which already wasn't very interesting to me).

That's not a dig at you. You weren't the guy asking the questions. But it sealed my lack of interest in the thread.

Anyway, if someone chooses not to go in endless circles with your 9/11 conspiracy nonsense, that isn't cowardice. It's boredom with the topic.
