The following sentence is written by a Japanese high school student.

" Yamanashi is a city where Mt Fuji is beautiful. "

I believe it is grammatically correct but it sounds a little awkward.
What do you think from naitive speaker's point of view?
If you think it awkward, can you explain the reason and suggest
better expression?

It indicates that Mt Fuji isn't beautiful in other cities.

Beautiful Mt Fuji can be viewed (or seen) from Yamanashi.

@Nolaneco,
Unless the city is located on a beautiful part of the mountain itself, I suggest you meant to say.
" Yamanashi is a city situated where there is a beautiful view of Mt Fuji. "

@Nolaneco,
One appropriate version might be: "Yamanashi is a city where the view of Mt Fuji is beautiful."

@Ragman,
Thank you. The theme of the writing practice was to use "where" and the
your suggestion of just adding "the view of" will be easiest for students.
