Over enthusiastic dentists

I have spent my life in terror of dentists. Evil or Very Mad Various house moves in my childhood resulted in a succession of dentists who dismissed the work of my previous dentist and insisted on re filling all my fillings. In order to re fill a tooth you have to drill away a bit more tooth and therefore I am now left with extremely fragile teeth. One by one the fillings have fallen out, crowns have disintigrated and whole chunks of tooth have fallen away. As if my paranoia about dentists wasn't enough, I now have the sort of mouth that most dentists would rub their hands together with glee to see with the prospect of the huge amounts of money required to restore me to any kind of respectability. My instinct is to just ignore the decline of my dental health (as I have done for the past 20 years) and hope that when my teeth fall out (as they surely must) it will not hurt too much. Is there any hope for me? Are there any sympathetic dentists out there who will not recoil in horror Shocked when they see the disaster area that is my mouth? Is it just co incidence that the only teeth that are giving me trouble are the ones which the dentists have worked on? Is it just co incidence that since I stopped going to the dentist I have not suffered from any kind of tooth ache? Confused

As a youth I recall my own dentist Dr. Von Sydow who was an escaped Nazi war criminal. He took great delight in standing over me while asking, "is it safe?" Dentists have seen it all. Don't worry!

I wouldn't allow decay to settle in my mouth, as a result of poor dental work. Remember, one thing in health of the human body can lead to another.

Decaying teeth can cause heart valve ( etc ) problems.

Best to seek out a holistic, kind and caring dentist and decide, which paths of dental care are the best for you based on your age, needs, and wants.

Implants are expensive, But, they don't decay, once inserted.

Get thee to a dentist. Ask your friends and coworkers who they go to, and shop around if you're unhappy.

Ignoring your mouth is no solution. You will still have pain and all that will have happened is that you will have exacerbated the problem, because any teeth that fall out will cause the others to shift.

Dentistry has changed, particularly in the last few years. It is less painful and most procedures are far more effective. Do you need new fillings? Probably not, but you may need some sort of implants (as Miller suggests) or repairs to strengthen what you have left. It's possible that one or two of your teeth will have to be pulled but the dentist will very likely give you implants where they were so that your remaining teeth stay in place. Your dentist will also put you on a program of regular hygienist cleanings so that you keep the teeth you have.

Both of my front top teeth have had breaks in them and I've had repair work done. It took less than an hour, didn't hurt, and it looks good - you can't tell I've had work done unless you look really closely and you know what you're looking for. Insurance covered it all, and those teeth are as strong as any of the others I've got.
