Okay my parents are coming to visit for 2 weeks. They have been here before and so have done all the usual touristy things - Duck Tour, Museums, etc. Apart from searching for Red Sox Tickets, what other little bits can I plan for them? Remember, I have no car and I am a crap driver so I won't be renting. I'll take them on a day-trip to Salem and maybe a weekend in Hyannis, but does anyone have any different ideas? I am looking for some cool day-trips (public transportation) or something that not all tourists do.
Take them to the pubs on Landsdown Street. Jillians is good for a late-night pool game or ping pong. Then take them down to the Combat Zone and...never mind.
Ahem the combat zone would be tame for them - they come from a pretty rough neighborhood - I've seen my mom smack a knife out of a bruisers hand coz she didn't appreciate him waving it in her vicinity.
I've forgotten details, but somewhere in that neck of the woods is a wolf sanctuary. You won't get more than glimpses of wolves, but I found the experience very exciting.
I must google that and see what I can find. Thanks Nod.
Just some random thoughts:
Dim Sum in Chinatown (I'd recommend China Pearl).
Rent a canoe/kayak at the Charles River Canoe & Kayak.
The Sox are overpriced. Take the train to Lowell and watch the Spinners. They play at a little gem of a ballpark.
Espresso & pastry at one of the local Italian cafes in the North End.
Drinks at the Ritz Bar overlooking the Public Gardens.
Mmmm, never thought of the Ritz ... they might like that! Thanks George.
Those things are all good, of course. Harvard Square is always busting with activity if you don't mind the youthfulness of the crowd. Or you can just come over my place in Brookline and get smashed on cheap wine.
The wolf sanctuary would require a car.
I second arnold arboretum. Also the Mount Auburn Cemetery is a gogeous arboretum of sorts.
You can make a long day trip, maybe, of taking the ferry from Boston to Provincetown.
Harvard square is over-rated.
Harvard Square didn't used to be over-rated. But it fell victim to the malling of America.
Arboretum. (Mrs. SealPoet is a student there...)
Golly... other than walking around I'm drawing a blank. But then, walking around is what I (used to) do. I've gotten too far away. It seems like Boston is far, but Cambridge isn't. I think it's triggered by the thought process that says 'if I'm going to such-and-such a place, where do I cross the river?'
Don't forget Lars Anderson Park in Brookline. The top of the hill affords a fabulous view of the city of Boston.

Boston is a good city for walking around.
When I go in to meet a friend and take in a Sox game, I generally get off at Haymarket and walk to the Common via State St. Then I walk through the Common, across Charles and through the Public Garden. From there I walk up the green space in the middle of Commonwealth Ave. It's a long walk through a city, but you are surrounded by grass, trees and flowers for much of the time.
I did the canoe thing on Charles River and boy, was it beautiful. If they are one bit outdoorsy, they might like that. The club where we rented boats was in Newton I guess, Charles River Club, or something like that.
That's the one. Near the Newton Marriott.

agreed -- except for border cafe, that is
i'm jest sayin' i don't think border cafe is overrated...
Oddly, and scarily, I've heard people rave about the stinkhole and it's ALWAYS crowded.
