Would you be so kind as to help me with this sentence too? "I met my friend as I walked down the street. " Why is the past simple used after as in the previous sentence? And can we use while instead of as in this sentence too?
"I met my friend as I walked down the street. "
"I met my friend when I walked down the street. "
met is past so walked must also be past

Thank you Punkey for your answer but I wonder why the past continuous was not used for the verb walk (the long action) when interrupted by the short action of the verb meet
Yes, you could use past progressive form in the last clause.
"I met my friend when I was walking down the street. "
