As osso has told us before, Bob Mankoff is the cartoon editor for the New Yorker and oversees the contest.

Here's his explanation of the process used to determine the winner.

Hinge indeed had a line on the winning caption, which was just a tad more succinct.

I've always thought that the most succinct is better and that is where we - not fail, but are too loose. Alas, I'm not personally snappy funny, and it's the connecting of funny and succinct that buys you a new Oldsmobile.
