Is my conversation natural English?:
A: This term I haven't seen John around, do you know what he's been doing lately?
B: I think he's gone on (an) exchange to France. Probably we won't see him until next term.
Is AN optional?

gone on an exchange trip to
gone on an exchange to France
could
be used, but adding 'trip' or 'visit' would be much more likely.
