-We make epitaphs because we hope veneration for his memory (=we respect him because we hear people talk about his good deeds) produce the same effect as (=perform the same function) the observation of his life(=learning/imitate the good deeds or things he did when he was alive).

Do you agree with my interpretation? In fact, I myself am not satisfied; I understand every word, but not the combination; OBSERVATION is elusive: I don't know whether it means we can OBSERVE (=see/glance) him, or means that the person follows (=observe) the rule of doing good things.

@WBYeats,

An observation is something you realise, then speak (or write) about.

The observation is the remark.

examples

"Young John seems to be growing up: I saw him talking to a girl at the bus-stop yesterday".
"The dollar has slipped against the yen today".
"Winter is coming on. I see more coats and scarves in the street now".

Thank you~

But the problem is in no way solved. If OBSERVATION, as you say, means a remark/comment etc., the original sentence is obscure as ever.

@WBYeats,

You're right, apologies. In your sentence, observation just means study.

Quote:
We make epitaphs because we hope veneration for his memory produce the same effect as the observation of his life

The sentence looks like it was not written by a native speaker.
If I may edit:

we write epitaphs
veneration of his memory
produces the same effect
