To my knowledge, translation is not a simple thing and the translating software cannot give a enough proper translation. To avoid some unnecessary errors caused by the misunderstanding of the text, a good command of the language is necessary. And the ability to organize the words, sentences and paragraphs can also be helpful to a perfect expression in another language.

If you just need to translate a word or a short sentence then you can use internet. That´s it.
If you really are into translating you have to know your own language and the language you translate into very well, you have to know the author well so you can express his/hers thoughts into another language.
Translating is timeconsuming and difficult.
Even professional terms can get all wrong.
I once tried to put an electrical item together. What we call positiv and negativ was translated with masculin and feminin.
