A court in Gera, Thüringia on Wednesday sentenced a German policeman with a self-confessed weakness for women's handbags to two and a half years in prison for stealing them in 15 cases. The authorities are also investigating whether the 49-year-old was responsible for a further 1,000 cases of handbag theft over the past six years. Apparently, a sexual fetish was the driving force behind the crime. A day before the sentencing, the accused, who has been suspended from duty, admitted to the court that he was irresistibly attracted to women's handbags and their contents on account of an abnormal sexual urge. A court doctor confirmed that he had detected an advanced sexual disfunction in the defendant, but said that it couldn't be used to absolve the man's crime.
