Haven't read that one, Deb, but I have read Pinker's "The Language Instinct" which is an excellent book. And, "Shipping News" is the one AP I did finish ... for the sentimental fact I bought it in a bookstore in Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, Maine, at the behest of an English friend, when we were traipsing around there some years back ... rather ambivalent about the book otherwise, to say the most.

I mentioned myopia, I guess it must be getting worse. I failed to notice "At Swim Two Boys" on the pollist. A foine book, that ... but I've done voted. Kara'd be after giving me a proper tongue-lashin' if she caught sight of that overlook.

Pueo, I've known since early times on Abuzz that you are deeply interested in the history of South Pacific isles, recalling your discussions on various government efforts to banish much of the original culture.

OK - no matter how hard I try I cannot rejig the poll so as to make sense!

We have a tie re our first book.

It is Fury or Middlesex, folks, please put in your final vote for one of these two options as soon as you can!

As I am the tying vote for Fury, and because as I continue to read I find it very interesting and enjoyable and chock-full of discussion topics but not at all Rushdie's best, and I am very fond of Rushdie and want to get people to read his best, and I just went and put a hold on "Middlesex" at the library (out now), I will go over to the Middlesex camp if another vote doesn't decide things within say the next 24 hours.

Where are we supposed to put the vote? I started by voting for Fury (I think). Then I voted for Pi. So I move back to Fury. I want to read Middlesex too, but would prefer to wait until it is out in trade paperback. Fury is in paperback, right?

Yes, Piffka, I gather Fury is out in paperback, cos nobody has said it isn't. We in Oz often seem to get paperbacks mor equickly than you folk in America. And you vote right here, on the thread - just put the name of the book you are voting for clearly in your post.

Fury and Middlesex each got three votes. They got the most votes. I cannot make a poll at the front of the thread for deciding between them, it won't let me - it thinks I am trying to corrupt the results of the poll!

We are now deciding between them

Piffka, have you voted on the poll? That's up top, at the very beginning of the question. It's what I mean about the tying vote -- it was 3 for Middlesex and 2 for Fury when I voted, then became 3/3. If you haven't voted on that poll yet, your vote would make it 4/3 in favor of Fury. My going-over thoughts are mostly just to break the stalemate -- if a Piffka vote tips it to "Fury", that's hunky-dory with me.

Waaaaaaaaaaaait a minute, where'd the poll go? There was a poll, wasn't there? Shocked Question Confused

Right, I wasn't sure if she meant voted in the sense of using the poll or just verbally here. Can you change your vote in a poll?

Anyway, the upshot of what I'm saying is I would be happy with either Middlesex or Fury, and since I seemed to have been the one to muck up the works and bring things to a halt, fine with to go for Middlesex if that unmucks things.

I would be interested, but I'm such a slow reader, you guys would be discussing the tenth book before I even finished with the first one. ;( c.i.

No - you cannot change your vote in a poll.

No vote "mucked up' the works!

Let us see what the people who voted other than for the two "winners" do this time around, Soze!

You can, of course, change your vote in the poll we are currently running, cos it isn't on the official poll software - it is only on the software in my head.

But I hope you don't - cos this is all taxing enough as it is, frankly...

It's making me ears spin.....
