UN-CONSCIONABLE Parental Neglect on TV

I just saw a new show called: The Hunt
on the History Channel. It showed some hunters on Kodiak Island
hunting for Kodiac Brown Bears (like BIG Grizzlys).

Among the hunters was a father and daughter team
who looked in her teens or 2Os. After a few days
of hunting bear, the father went home because
he believed that his wife wanted him.
He abandoned his daughter, who remained armed with a musket!

She can easily disappear, by day or by night, down the throat of a bear.
Her father does not care. This is near suicidal, like playing Russian Roulette.

Maybe the camera crew wud defend her; I dunno. Ineffable stupidity.
That 's the grossest negligence.

Yes, I'm sure the people who are there with her would protect her if need be.

I dunno.
Its possible that she mounted her camera on a tripod; un-certain.
She might be alone.

It looks very irresponsible. Bravery and stupidity are not the same thing.

After she touches off her one and only shot
from the musket while the bear is charging, she is effectively un-armed.

I just watched a minute of the show, and the camera is obviously not stationary on a tripod. There are camera men.

That 's a good thing.
Presumably, the camera crew is not defenseless.
There is probably something in their union contract against that.

Thanks for checking, Chai!

Decency required that her father and his guns remain there
with his daughter. Wildlife can be un-predictable and dangerous.

@OmSigDAVID,
If the woman is in her 20's, she is free to make her own decisions. As a parent, her father can advise her against hunting bears, but he is in no way constrained to support her decision if she decides to ignore him.

Thay were hunting bear on Kodiac Island together. He defended her with his rifle.

He chose to abandon her there, to go visit his wife
because he thought that she wanted him to go to her.

She is hunting bear with a MUSKET.

That is not safe. How do u like THAT ?

@OmSigDAVID,
Adults do things that are not safe all the time. At some point the parents are no longer responsible for what grown children do.

Her father made the decision to walk out on her.

He is disloyal.

He left her there with a MUSKET for self defense.

@OmSigDAVID,
Come on David this is a TV show and my bet is that there is at least one person behind her with a high power rifle and that assuming there are real bears within a hundred miles of her instead of men in bear suits.

No wonder Hollywood doesn't really make much effort for an intelligent storyline nowadays.

They know that there are many out there who believe everything they see and are unquestioning.

Stick a few explosions and bang bangs here and there, make sure there's a nod to patriotism, and they've got a multi million box office smash on their hands.

@OmSigDAVID,
Wouldn't the father have been complicit in her idiocy if he had stayed? Wouldn't staying imply approval? After all, if he is there with a musket, doesn't that imply it is all right? Doesn't hanging around when your child has a weapon dramatically increase the changes of patricide? What of the father's duty to his spouse? If he has all the muskets, doesn't that leave his wife undefended?

Well, he did that before thay arrived
in Kodiac Island to hunt the Kodiac bears.
Thay 'd have left, if thay had gotten a bear.
He was guarding her, before he left and went home.

Thay were vacationing together on the bear hunt.
Thay 'd agreed.

HE had a bolt action RIFLE,
presumably with a few rounds in its magazine.

MY dad survived!

engineer wrote:

He cud get her a police bear to guard the house.

Presumably, the wife had decent defensive gunnery.
It was only their daughter who had that fetish with musketry.

I 'm pretty sure that thay r real Kodiac bears.
Even if the camera crew is armed in its own defense,
his daughter was BETTER defended when her dad was there
manning his bolt action rifle.

Wud u turn your back and walk out on someone u love,
like that, Bill????? Tell us.

I 'd have better loyalty than that, if it were me.
If that father were among my friends,
he 'd lose face in front of me.

@OmSigDAVID,
Once more David, it is a TV show and for your own amusement I would suggest taping and then freezing the declaimers at the end or at the beginning of the show and see if it does not in fact tell you that no mater if it is label a reality show or not it is no such thing.

The girl, in my opinion at least, is in zero danger of being harm by bears.

I have an idea that there are ethnic/cultural factors here that make this quite common.

What show was this?

That was not revealed to us.

To its dis-credit, the show failed to reveal
the armament of the father, either; regarding his daughter,
we were informed that she had only a musket.
Therefore, she had only 1 round at her disposal
in the face of a charging bear, Bill 's skepticism to the contrary notwithstanding.
