@Setanta,
Number 1 in the Summer of '63 it puts me pool-side after swim practice; a water- logged 12 year-old tadpole.

Based on a French song written by Paul Muriat(Love Is Blue) and Frank Pourcel called Chariot.
The English lyrics were by Norman Gimbel(Killing Me Softly)

Peggy was the youngest(15) female singer to have a #1 hit all over the world(Australia, Japan New Zealand and Scandinavia)

In 1971 I happened to see a kick-ass soul/funk/jazz band called Cold Blood.
Fronting them was a tiny blonde named Lydia Pense who gave Janis and Aretha a run for their money
She starts singing at 1:40

@vonny,
She's got a remarkably low range for a female singer.
Scrumptious song don't hurt either.

@vonny,
Alicia Keys
Another great singer with a gospel piano comp style.
Reminiscent of the very early Aretha and let's not forget how great Aretha is.
Here's a lovely song written by Stevie Wonder and Aretha tears it up.

And though Dionne was Bacharach and David's official songbird Aretha gave I Say A Little Prayer a powerful gospel interpretation.
