At the beginning of the thread, Jespah posted Robyn Adele Anderson and Postmodern Jukebox. They do a lot of styles--here's their country music entry . . .

Pink Martini is an orchestra sized band which does a wide variety of songs, usually in a salsa style. It was formed by the classically-trained pianist Thomas Lauderdale, who asked a friend from their Harvard days to come out to Portland to be the band's lead singer.

Here China Forbes sings "Una nottre a Napoli" (One Night in Naples) . . .

@Setanta,
Bravo! Annie! What a great live performance.
Speaking of which; All sorts of finagling can be done in the studio with these modern gals.
The proof is in the pudding when viewing these live videos.

@Setanta,
I love Blurred Lines.
The test of a great song is if it can be done in an alien style and still keep it's identity.

@panzade,
Oh yeah . . . for example, there are those who might doubt that Hayley Westenra has perfect pitch. But this live performance, a cappella, puts it beyond doubt . . .

@edgarblythe,
The Relettes started out as the girl group The Cookies and had a hit with Carole King's "Chains" which was later covered by George Harrison and The Beatles.

A later member of the Raelettes was Merry Clayton who sang the iconic part in Gimme Shelter.
Here is a comparison of her version with another great back-up singer, Lisa Fischer.

By the way. The documentary "20 Feet From Stardom" is a fascinating look at the lives of back-up singers. Well worth searching out.
