WASHINGTON ?- The Bush administration scrambled Sunday to contain a burgeoning controversy over mistreatment and sexual abuse of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. troops in Iraq.
(1) Scramble = bustle ?
(2) contain = to check the spread of?
------------------------------------------------------------
(3) Maj. = Major? Gen. = General?
Context:
Myers said he has not read the report prepared by Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba and could not comment on the New Yorker account of its contents, written by veteran investigative journalist Seymour Hersh.
If so, I'm confused, because a Maj. is:
A comissioned rank in the U.S. Army, Air Force, or Marine Corps that is above captain and below lieutenant colonel.
How could he be called Gen.?
1) scramble- To struggle or contend frantically in order to get something done.
2) contain- To halt the spread or development of something.
3) Major General- Abbr. MG or Maj Gen or MajGen) A commissioned rank in the U.S. Army, Air Force, or Marine Corps that is above brigadier general and below lieutenant general.
Oops, my dictionary really has listed the jargon "Major General", though "Maj.Gen." could not be found.
