I think the question involves royalties and copyright protection. I don't know the answer, either.

I'm a teacher from malaysia. Here we have this action song competition for level 1 primary school children every year. I've been teaching English subject for nearly 17 years already. I've been training my students and involved with this competition for 5 years and had been using children songs for the competition. Then i were ask to teach a new school in Sabah. ( Before this i teach in Sarawak ). Here i were asked to train students for this action song competition. Here in the new school i also become mentor for 2 trainees english teacher. So i asked these 2 trainees to involve in training the students and making preparation for the competition. When i chose songs for the action song, these told me that their fellow trainees friends from other schools use pop songs sang by justin beiber, katy parry and etc for the action song competition. They also tell me that the participant also not doing actions for the song but dancing. The songs that i've chose are Yankee Doodle, hokey pokey and tomorrow.

Please, please give your opinions

@hariz,
Hello and welcome hariz.

My opinion is you can use any songs that you want to use because it is for educational purposes. A combination of different music may reveal whether or not the children are more motivated to sing and dance to pop songs.

@Miss L Toad,
I think it would be best if you let your trainee teachers choose the songs and the dance and any action so that the overall feeling will be vibrant and modern while you supervise the overall production management and be the mentor to the trainee teachers.

@Miss L Toad,
Tq, Miss L Toad, tq for your opinion. I did asked the trainees to choose the song, but they took it to long to decided what song they want for the competition. The competition will be held in the middle of april. I also have other competition such as public speaking and story telling also in april, that why i can't wait. I've got to start from now training my student for the competitions. ( 'time is gold :-)' ). But today i've have decided to change the song with 'You'll be in my heart' tarzan song sang by Phill Collin. So what do think?

@hariz,
Ty hariz, I could tell your were a dedicated busy teacher, wow public speaking and story telling in addition to the other competition, good work. I firmly believe you should delegate the music , movement (singing, dancing) competition to the junior trainee teachers , they have to learn how to be leaders and experience is the only way. Your choice is good but I still like the Justin Bieber or Katy Perry concepts, make the trainee teachers choose ( there is still plenty of time), while you step back and supervise/mentor them.
