As serendipitous as a three dollar bill, especially when you were only expecting a two. Okay, I'm waxing poetic now....

It used to be a quite common expression in the USA (which has never had a three dollar bill). I know two variations -- "as phony as a three dollar bill" and "as queer as a three dollar bill."
