What's the difference between "cab"and"taxi"?

None, in American English. Taxi seems to be one of those words understood everywhere, cab may only be common in the US.

Brits used to hail hansom cabs in the 1800's, and they quickly became known by the shorter name 'cab'. Even today Brits use the word 'cab' and 'taxi' interchangeably and I think Americans do too.
