After asking someone a question for no special reason, you get asked in turn why you asked the question, what idiomatic English should you use?

"Just asking. . . ." sounds just fine to me. As a complete sentence, you would say something like "I was just asking out of idle curiosity", but "Just asking" is good and a very natural answer.

People often say "No special reason" or "no reason".
