situation:

Mary and Peter love each other. Though Mary's father has decided to marry Mary to John, Mary has decided to rebel against this decision. So what should I say to describe Mary's action?

-Mary can't ___ Peter.

I thought of BETRAY, but I can't find a word that can adequately describe the complicated feelings between male and female. In my language, it would be a word mixing the feelings and responsibility of a pair of lovers.

@WBYeats,
"Betray" is appropriate.
And I can't think of any other at the moment. I'll have a look in my thesaurus, later.

@WBYeats,
Abandon, forsake, jettison, leave, relinquish, desert, toss away.

These won't all fit in your sentence.

Mary won't/can't/refuses ...
