hello everyone. i am a 54 year old woman with "severe

' i have "severe"osteoporosis. my name is cheryl powell. right now
now i am injecting forteo on a daily basis. my bones, muscles and joints just ache away. i have trouble doing exercise because i have residual paralysis on the left side of my body, walk with a limp and wear a leg brace. this whole osteo . situation is overwhelming. there is so much info. about how to deal with this disease, that i don't know what to do. it is very depressing, and i think depression has a negative effect on osteoporosis. i feel i need to pick and choose from everything out there and decide what is best for me. i'd really like to find some support or exercise group in the brooklyn new york area. this is my first post and i would really like to hear from anyone who has anything to say about osteoporosis. please answer. thanks, cheryl powell

Hi Cheryl, and welcome to Able2know.

Sorry you're not feeling well.

Have you spoken with your doctor about possibly finding an exercise group? It doesn't have to be anything fancy. He or she may very well suggest something non-weight-bearing, such as swimming, which can be done at most Ys. Just look for a swimming class at the Y for people recovering from injuries, or for seniors (I know you're not a senior, but the pace of the exercises would probably be best and if you ask first they probably will be okay with you joining in).

Plus, your doctor should know before you start any exercise program, and he or she might also be able to steer you to programs where your plan offers a discount.

I've read that it's important to take adequate doses of calcium and to do weight bearing excercises daily. This, plus your medication should help you.

Were you ever on the HRT?
