I am very ignorant qua matters of competitive athletics;
never had much interest in them. I have seen on TV,
in the Olympics that thay appear to LIKE it
when thay win 3rd Place.
If I were competing there, I 'd rather come in 4th or worse,
in preference to 3rd, because that poor fellow is shown before the world
as the loser of the 3 who are exhibited up there.
Is that embarrassing? Up there next to the actual winners?
(Yeah, I know: half empty or half full. We know.)
Its better to be inconspicuous, if u r losing.
I think that if I were in the Olympics ( a ridiculous notion ),
running a foot race, if I saw that I was about to come in 3rd
( i.e., Bronze ) I 'd be tempted to slow down or maybe start moving backward
to avoid the ignominy. Let someone else, who is not paying attention, get the Bronze.
@OmSigDAVID,
these athletes are supposedly all the worlds elite in a particular event. Third place is something they will remember in later years, and abronze medal is proof.
@farmerman,
Yea, but it is conspicuous proof
that thay did not win.
@OmSigDAVID,
I think that you are quite a shallow person. johny weir, the new talking head at the games never won any medals at sochi yet hes a commentator next to sarah lapinski.
you will see siler, bronze and gold medal winners at the white house and all will be honored.
im going back to watch my curling quarters
After the Olympics many viewers revert back to a mindset where being exceptional is not a worthwhile goal. Just coast and enjoy; be cool. These young people don't smoke, don't drink, don't stay up late. So, the whole event (Olympics), in my opinion, is a celebration of dedicated effort, quite different than the popular culture.

not around the gut, awful.
@OmSigDAVID,
More so around the cranium. All fat and barbie.

Did you know that there are shooting sports in the Summer Olympics?

I did not.
In my youth, some of the schools that I attended
had competitive gunnery teams. I 'm a fairly decent shot,
but other students were more accurate than I was; thay made the teams.

@OmSigDAVID,
If you saw the girls who won the Au,AG, and Cu/Sn Half-Pipe medals, youd see how thrilled they all were in being the "top of the top".

Winter too. Biathlon.

Is that true ??????

Thay actually
DID look happy with 3rd place.
I guess its half-full or half-mt.

I hadn't heard that, but I don't really follow biathlon.
It has appeared to me as if they were using guns when biathlon has been shown in Olympic coverage over the past week.
I'm not entirely sure how biathlon could be carried out without the use of guns, as it is kind of integral to the sport.
@oralloy,
they've been using air guns no?

I wish they would change the format of playoff brackets so that you didn't get silver medals by losing the final game.
Maybe something like the top two teams play for the gold. Then the loser of that game plays the third-ranked team for the silver. Then the loser of that game plays the fourth-ranked team for the bronze.
That way all three of the medals would be secured by way of victory.

They were ejecting brass out of bolt actions.
Also the guns had a mild report on TV, although perhaps an Olympic-quality air gun could drive something fast enough to cause a supersonic crack.
