normal secondary school process:

5 years - public exam one - 2 years - public exam two - uni
================================
However, there's a system allowing students to study only one more year after public exam one if their performance was outstanding before getting into uni. What is this system called in English?:

eg He got into uni through/by ___

@WBYeats,
I think there is a specific term that describes that but it eludes me at present.

There is the term "get a bye" that could be used.

He got a brain bye/ an ace the exam bye.

See,
