This definition obviously verifies the accuracy of my use of "let go of."

You have to understand what the difference is between a literal meaning - imagine I had a tight grip on your hand and then I let go of it - and a figurative meaning. The meaning for Ishii isn't literal, it is figurative hence no 'of '. Read your dictionary entry again.

He let go of her hand and she fell back.
