Give a bean

Reply Thu 15 Apr, 2004 10:05 am
Context:

I Wouldn't Give A Bean
To Be A Fancy Pants Marine,
I'd rather Be A Dogface Soldier Like I Am.
I Wouldn't Trade My Old O.D.'s
For All The Navy's Dungarees
For I'm The Walking Pride Of Uncle Sam;
On All The Posters That I Read It Says
Be All That You Can
So They're Tearing Me Down To Build Me Over Again
I'm Just A Dogface Soldier
With A Rifle On My Shoulder
And I Eat Raw Meat For Breakfast Everyday.
So Feed Me Ammunition,
Keep Me In The Third Division,
Your Dogfaced Soldiers A-Okay.

===================================
(1) What does "give a bean" mean?

(2) O.D.?

(3) Didn't get what "So They're Tearing Me Down To Build Me Over Again" means. Who do "they" refer to?

I don't give a bean (not really currently in use, a bit old fashioned) means that you couldn't care less, it is of no importance to you.

1) So trivial that you wouldn't part with even a bean because of it (the chance to be a marine matters naught to the soldier).

Some other phrases with similar sentiment are "Don't give a hoot" and "Wouldn't give two figs."

2) I have no idea what O.D. stands for in this instance, but assume it refers to a pair of army issue pants, because of the following reference to navy dungarees (jeans).

3)"Be all you can be" is an US army recruitment slogan. The suggestion is that you will reach your full potential as a person if you join.

"So They're Tearing Me Down To Build Me Over Again" is, I think, referring to a perceived notion that the navy thinks it's superior to the army and that a soldier would have to train even more to be as successful as a marine.

My guess is that "They" in this case, is the navy.

O.D. stands for Olive Drab the color of the Army uniform.

Okay! Thanks Joeblow and panzade.
I guess "tear down" means "denigrate"here, right?

I don't think "denigrate" is exactly the right description. It's more like stripping away character flaws with a view to replacing them with something better.

To be a little more specific Wilso, and I'll use the Marine Corps D.I. as an example, the instructors have to indoctrinate the recruits into an unselfish unit, capable of fighting together and not being a one man army. I think that's the essence of tearing down , and it's not really a negative connotation.
Kudos for everyone helping Ori and for his thirst for knowledge.

I know what you mean, I was actually trying to avoid a military explanation, though that is probably the best way.

Nice replies ! But I still got confused because the soldier has said at the begining of the song:
"I Wouldn't Give A Bean
To Be A Fancy Pants Marine,
I'd rather Be A Dogface Soldier Like I Am. "

The soldier made fun of Marine as "fancy pants". So he'd rather be a dogface soldier! How could he be tore down by Marine as to build himself over again? Rolling Eyes

Hmm, I think "they" mean "All The Posters That I Read ", then no problem here. Very Happy

In the last line there should be an apostrophe before the last "s" in soldiers.... soldier's... to stand for the word "is." Without that apostrophe, there is no verb.

"On All The Posters That I Read It Says
Be All That You Can
So They're Tearing Me Down To Build Me Over Again"

This is referring to his experience in basic training. As I said above, the idea of it to remove character flaws, and replace them with the qualities that panzade discusses. Things like pride, loyalty and obedience.

He's not tore down by a marine, he's tore down by his drill instructor and the leadership. It's a positive thing. When you tear down an engine it is with the understanding that you're gonna improve it by replacing the valves , pistons and stems...get it?

Thanks, Panzade. (So you were kidding about matriarch?) I was impressed with Kita's work. I don't usually check out the original art but I'm glad I did this morning.

Yes Piffka.

Wilso, "they" actually refers to the drill masters in army who removed the soldier's character flaws according to your explanation?
