@Olivier5,
It was fairly obvious what Rocky's point was.

Don't tell him Rocky, I like it when he pretends to know what's going on.

My original claim of "half the language" has evolved to "41% of the 10,000 most frequent words". That's neat and precise. You want to argue with this, or you agree?

If by that you are saying your original claim was inaccurate and you are amending it, then I am fine with that. If you are claiming your original claim is correct then I would still have an issue.

@parados,
Indeed, my original claim was inaccurate and I am amending it based of the only data I could find. That's what normal people do when they are not in a pissing context...

Rock pointed out that the xenophobic outpour could have been much worse. He's probably right, except most Americans know better than give us the surrender monkey **** now that they screwed up so bad in Iraq.

@Olivier5,
Your delusions aren't necesarily fascinating, but they are the central issue here, as you have tried to use your dubious numbers to support your delusion that the English owe the French a huge cultural debt, and that the evidence for that can be found in the words of French derivation in their language. That's simply not a supportable arguement. When you advance that nonsense, and people deny it, you whine that you are being ganged up on.

As for your numbers, no, i don't agree in so far as you want to use it as evidence of the origins of English culture. Just as i don't accept that everyone who posts here disagreeing with you is evidence that people are ganging up on you, and particularly because you are French.

Maybe it's just because you're paranoid and people like picking on paranoid people. Why don't you adopt that as your latest delusion so we can have a little variety here.

I never said anything like that. You are making things up. Straw is what you like to fight.

What are you talking about? We are talking of etymology here. If you're not interested, move on.

I know better than adopting your mental diseases, thank you.

In your response, maybe you can summon from your vast proto-English vocabulary some other insults than the usual snotty, sneering, snide-dishing snob. Some other insult starting with sn- perhaps, for variety's sake?

@Olivier5,
I can go get the quotes from your posts in which you specifically mentioned culture, but i doubt if it's worth the candle. You introduced the subject of etymology to support your claim of the cultural debt.

In the context of pathetic sentence you offered, "snide-dishing snob" is not English. Once again, you can't deal with criticism, so you default to personal insults. You really don't have much going for you, apparently.

So... about those numbers... 41% is quite impressive, don't you think?

@Olivier5,
Well, I'm impressed!

I'm glad I was able to get such a fun factoid out of "The Great Christmas Debate" (so called because of the time it took place, I suppose, since it has had nothing at all to do with Christmas -- and yes, that tag is from me). Wink

A2K should have "The Great Christmas Debate" every year, and every year it should be something completely unrelated to Christmas. Next year the debate should be about the Vikings' influence on Byzantine culture.

Hi there. I am sorry your thread ended up pretty much highjacked... It all started as a joke I made about the Brits. Then all hell broke loose... :-)

Shouldn't that be "The German plunders it, the French turn a blind eye to it and the Englishman liberates it" ?

Well, I've heard comments that that makes sense, since the evergreen tree was minding its own business in the forest and Germans decided to kill it, and then incongruously claim that a dead evergreen tree symbolizes eternal life.

Let me add: fa-mished.

For some reason the French loved Jerry Lewis. He was popular in the 1950's and early 1960's, I believe because the American sense of humor was less nuanced? Anyway, show a Frenchman a good mime and they might just fall down laughing.

Their basic character trait, in my opinion, is ingratitude. While they do admit that the U.S. liberated them, they were very quick to get back into the business of glorifying everything French. Just so egocentric, in my opinion. Like a small child that strays from home, and then cries for his big brother, the French only show real friendliness to western nations when they might need them; otherwise, it appears, in my opinion, they just want to appear like they can take on whoever by themselves. It might not be a national characteristic, but a trait shared with many short people?

Don't blame me. Notice I mention nil about word derivations. That is the crux of your arguing about the French, and their language. I just offered the thought that they are often intrusive, egotistical, and annoying, in my opinion.

"Casual"? And it might not be prejudice, as in pre-judging. All based on observations, perhaps.

I think part of the problem is that the French might seem incongruous to cultures that are also Christian based, yet not so free with physical hedonism. For that incongruity, more ascetic cultures might not feel comfortable with the French ability to go to church after getting fellatio performed on them?
