My sentences:

-Before proceeding to that bookcase, I intended to lay my hands on Shakespeare's Sonnets, but before lighting on the book, one shelf down I saw Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan; so I picked it up and read for half an hour, before leaving without remembering to buy Sonnets.

1. Is it natural/correct English to use the red words in this way?

2. How can I improve my sentences?

@WBYeats,
1. Absolutely.

2. I don't understand your question. Which sentences?

The opening sentence makes perfect sense to me.

Stick in a few robots or zombies or mutants to pep things up a bit.
