david, with his usual ignorance of history, clearly has no idea which end of the political spectrum is responsible for blue laws.

Isn't time for government to help everyone out and do what retailers on their own can not/will not do, and pass a law that stores must be closed on Thanksgiving

I thought you were for less govt? Evidently not. One thing the retailers care about is their market share. If they are open and the competitor is not, their sales may increase? Were your businesses open?

@Lordyaswas,
Your story rings a bell with me. I've worked in manufacturing most of my life. I was in retail about 6 months between jobs and it was not a good experience. Between bad bosses and working with the public, it was not a good experience. Plus low pay. I'm so glad I managed a technical education when I was younger. I try to give retail workers a break now.

one joker who does not give a damn about his employees decides to open then they all think they need to open to protect market share, even though it is highly unlikely that doing this helps them over all at all. this is what i mean when I say that capitalists need government regulation in self interest, market dynamics takes them to a bad place sometimes and they need a little help to avoid the bad outcome (I am a socialist, this opinion from me should come as no surprise) .

of course I was closed.

I am for competent non corrupt right sized government. my dim view of the current condition of our government does not negate my belief in the importance of government towards our well being. as a socialist coming to the conclusion that government has become abusive and needs to be massively shrunk is painful.

nonsense, reasonable rational game rules lead to greater efficiency and less cost. look no further than auto emission and safe design laws to see my point.

@hawkeye10,
Ive always been of the opinion that commerce or industry, without oversight and monitoring, will NOT do the right thing.
Look at our early industry in the US. Dangerous deplorable conditions and poison to the environment.
It took Clean Air, Clean Water, NEPA and SUPERFUND to curb a lot of the "free market" cowboys
