What is the correct apostrophe placement in this sentence?

This story is about three boys', John and his two friends', quest to find treasure.

How about:
This story is about the quest of three boys, John and his two friends, to find treasure.
I would be inclined to include the names of the friends.

Apostrophe not always necessary
