What is your first reaction as your eye touches the "close" in the headline below:

So Close, Jurors See Long Effort End in Nothing

My first reaction is that the close here meant "being near in space or time".

Yes, I presume they were close to a verdict or decision, but didn't actually make it. As we might say, 'so near and yet so far' or even in other contexts 'a miss is as good as a mile' - meaning if you haven't hit your target, it doesn't matter how near you were to it, you have still missed it.
