I want to argue for the exact opposite, that man has an intrinsic need for understanding.
So when someone encounters a mystery it will involve them until they find an acceptable solution.
Some will find "It just is." an acceptable solution. Some will posit an explanation which satisfies an agenda or perhaps manipulate the mystery in a way that gives them power over others. Some will weave an explanation from what they already know about the world and some of
those people will keep digging until every discrepancy is teased out and they can be satisfied that their explanation is a fair description of the world as it is.
IMO it is the urge towards a solution which drives human beings.
