Willie (Reed) Louis, witness in Emmett Till case, dies

I'll bet you never heard of Willie Reed or Willie Louis. I know I never had. But back in 1955 he did an incredibly brave thing for a black man in the American South of the time. He testified in the trial of two white men accused of lyching Emmett Till (of whom, I'm sure, you have heard).

Willie died at age 76 this week. You can read all about it here.

RIP, Mr. Louis.

It's amazing that the name meant absolutely nothing to me when I heard it on the NPR newscast. I had to go the NYTimes site to look it up.
