When to use "In" or "On"

Can someone please share the rule on using "in" vs. "on", for example: the letter is "in" the mail OR the letter is "on" the mail? I am a foreigner and ALWAYS get confused with these two...

Cleo we'd say "in" though usage depends on the specific sentence

A larger package was sitting on our mailbox

'On' means 'above'
'In' means ' Inside'
