'Emboldening'

As "stand your ground" claims have increased, so too has the number of Floridians with guns. Concealed weapons permits now stand at 1.1 million, three times as many as in 2005 when the law was passed.

"I think the (stand your ground) law has an emboldening effect. All of a sudden, you're a tough guy and can be aggressive,'' said George Kirkham, a professor emeritus at Florida State University who has worked as a police officer.

Criminologists say that when people with guns get the message they have a right to stand and fight, rather than retreat, the threshold for using that gun goes down. All too often, Bruce Bartlett, chief assistant state attorney for Pinellas-Pasco counties, sees the result.

"I see cases where I'll think, 'This person didn't really need to kill that person but the law, as it is written, justifies their action,' " Bartlett said about incidents that his office decides not to prosecute due to "stand your ground." "It may be legally within the boundaries. But at the end of the day, was it really necessary?"

@BillRM,
From the reason.com article.
Quote:
That last point relates to a finding that could be seen as evidence of racial bias: While black and white defendants fared equally well, people who killed blacks were more likely to make successful self-defense claims than people who killed whites. "People who killed a black person walked free 73 percent of the time," the Times reported, "while those who killed a white person went free 59 percent of the time."

73% vs 59%. There's bias against black victims.

That support the other article I posted.

ABC seriously needs to release a transcript of what B29 said...what has been released is so chopped up and edited that it might have been put together by a "reality" tv crew.

You were with the Amanda Knox thread from the start, and you refused to pay attention to any facts, lied about the existence of those facts, and even engaged in name-calling when called on to address said facts.

Can't see how a state of total ignorance could possibly lead to anything worse from you. It might actually lead to an improvement.

I rather naturally agree with firefly,

Well, you're both evil. It sort of stands to reason you'd agree.

Maybe one day you two will find out what it's like to endure the sort of prosecutorial persecution that you celebrate.

However, the SYG laws do not need to be abolished at all.
What Zimmerman was accused of doing had nothing to do with SYG, nor should he have been allowed to claim it did.

BUT, that does not mean the fundamental law is bad.

Setting aside for a moment the fact that Zimmerman did not claim Stand Your Ground to begin with (since he had no opportunity to flee, it was a regular old-fashioned self defense claim), what's this nonsense about not allowing the defense to put forward the case that they choose?

Should the defense just be forced to enter a guilty plea?

Perhaps however is does not show that it matter if the defendant is black or white so if Zimmerman had been as black as a piece of coal and needed to killed Trayvon in self defend he would had fare as well as a white person or a mixed race person such as Zimmerman under the SYG law.

To put it another way if Trayvon had been white if would not had matter as far as the chance of conviction if Zimmerman had been white. The chance of conviction would had been greater then having Trayvon black but it would have been the same odds as far as the skin color of Zimmerman is concern,

Hell in the case of a black Zimmerman there would had not been a trial as the judgment of the prosecutor would not have been likely overrule by pressure from the like of Sharpton to do so.

Lot of black men and a higher percent of black men then whites will find themselves behind bars if the black so call leadership get it wish and the SYG laws are repeal.

They can not debate without doing so it would seems.

Fair warning.

I do not think she care about us as we will said whatever we wish to say and the hell with the wicked witch of the west however she is doing so to frighten the more timid from daring to disagree with her and of course to have the less bright members disregarding whatever a racist, drunk. drunk driver, rapist, and pedophile might say. I am not sure but I think at one time she charge me with being a drug user but I am not sure enough to add that to the list.

I do kind of love listing all the many charges she and her followers had level against me at one time or another.

The people you need to worry about their safety is Zimmerman, his family, his lawyers, anyone that ever had a kind word for him in public, and most important the six jurors and their family with special note of their children.

Strange indeed that threatening to kill Nancy Grace will get you track down and arrested but threatening any of the above and government at no level is doing a damn thing about it.

You are a sick SOB as sick as those who are issuing the threats.

If you wish a lawless society where we allow the replacement of the justice system and honoring jury verdicts with private vendettas I do not think that you will be happy with the results as the gun nuts will rule the lands and mainly the white gun nuts at that.

Now Zimmerman have every damn right in the world to live his life in freedom and safety but disregarding him his wife, his brother, his parents, his lawyers and the jury members and their children surely should not be targets under any theory even a sick SOB like you can come up with.

@BillRM,
The only sickos around here are the gun-happy yokels who think their rights to bear arms also has rights to kill blacks at will. They get off free 73% of the time.

You can't even justify the killing of children in our schools - by white gun lovers.

Many accidents are by young white children killing their own siblings.

Who's the sick one here? It's obvious to most people.

(CNN) -- A Kentucky mother stepped outside of her home just for a few minutes, but it was long enough for her 5-year-old son to accidentally shoot and kill his 2-year-old sister with the .22-caliber rifle he got for his birthday, state officials said.
The shooting that took the life of Caroline Sparks in southern Kentucky has been ruled an accident, Kentucky State Police Trooper Billy Gregory said.
"It's just one of those nightmares," he said, "a quick thing that happens when you turn your back."
Young children in the area are often introduced to guns at an early age, Gregory said.
Ferguson: Irresponsible humans, not guns
"In this part of the country, it's not uncommon for a 5-year-old to have a gun or for a parent to pass one down to their kid," he said.
Her family kept the Crickett rifle in what they considered to be a safe spot, Cumberland County Coroner Gary White told the CNN affiliate.
The boy was playing with it Tuesday when it accidentally went off and killed his sister, White said.
"The little Crickett rifle is a single-shot rifle, and it has a child safety," White told CNN. "It's just a tragic situation."
