Semi-colon

So I've battled for a long time with my good friend the semi-colon. I still don't seem to be able to get it right despite having read many how-to guides on the little fella.

I was wondering if someone could tell me if the following works......

'Much research has highlighted the fact that a diagnosis of cancer impacts individuals in many ways; causing psychological distress and emotional effects.'

I thought that it was appropriate here as the colon comes before a qualifying statement?

Any feedback gratefully received!!

Matt

@MattB1983,
Well Matt after a lifetime of journ my immediate reaction calls instead for a comma; though I might have used no punctuation at all

The fussbudget however will point out a subtle difference in meaning

@dalehileman,
Definately needs a comma; not a semi-colon.
