Metabolism in biology is a mechanism that is naturally existent, you discover it but not develop it. Now the author is talking about the origin of life...

Context:

In summary, while the question of the origin of life is a fascinating one, and the inability of modern sicence to develop a statistically probable mechanism is intriguing, this is not the place for a thoughtful person to wager his faith.
