I have been suffering from quite an embarrassing problem for the past few years now. I feel like I have very limited control of my bowels and often have to run to the toilet without warning. I'm naturally a very nervous person, and the problem only arises when I have to go out or when I'm a 'no escape' situation, like a long car journey or a social event. I've been to my doctor and physically I'm fine; he says the problem is all in my mind. I don't know what to do anymore. I feel very isolated and am quite often scared to leave the house in case I have an accident. Although I've never actually had one, I've had enough close calls to make me apprehensive. I had my first experience back in high school and since then the problem's only gotten worse. My parents tried sending me to counseling for a while, but it didn't get me anywhere; neither did the bedranol tablets my doctor prescribed me. I try calming techniques which help sometimes, but the problem always comes back. Can anyone please suggest any medication or other solutions I could try?
@shelvis93,
Next time you see your doctor, ask him if it may have something to do with your vagel nerve aka vagus nerve.

Here are some other things to look into:

This is not uncommon. There are medications that can help an irritable bowel or spastic bowel. Lomotil is one.
Yoga really helped me with this issue when my bowel didn't wake up evenly after surgery.
Re the cause: I believe that the symptom is the soul. All your anxiety is in your bowels. Other people get headaches or have breathing problems, etc. etc.
The main thing is to get your anxiety under control.
