I prefer using the dash rather than the parenthesis, but I've never had a typewriter or computer keyboard that actually had a dash on it. Grammar books recommend using a double-hyphen, but it looks rather silly after all. Are keyboard manufactures trying to tell us something by neglecting the dash or are they simply illiterate?
I noticed that Microsoft Word automatically converts double-hyphens to a dash at times, but often you have to trick it into doing so.
i generally only use the dash when my bladder is -
'somewhat urging'!
I'm partial to the dash--but accept the double hyphen as a compromise in this imperfect world.
Yes, Noddy. But there are plenty of superfluous symbols on my keyboard that I'll probably never use. Why not add a dash?
My Mac will do it easily. I'd show you, but my Mac is in my office. I'm stuck here with a PC.

Sorry, but I have no individual--or
collective--clout with the Keyboard Powers That Be.
I'd guess that the keyboard was designed by and for computer geeks and reflects a geek's view of the univers.

Thanks for very useful information.
Thanks, Wy! I've asked this question a number of times, and you're the only person with the knowledge.
