Peter Segal Hosts The Constitution

This is a program the right needs to watch.

Peter Segal interviewed a Montana gun advocate named Gary Marvin who said that the states understand/protect citizens best because they are closest to the people, a classic conservative argument.

However, he wants to push back the power of the federal government because, according to him, the state were there first. On one level, this is only true of the original 13 states because the other states were created through the permission of and under the laws of the federal government. On another level, that statement is not true even of the original 13 because they weren't states but settlements and/or commercial ventures. They were founded by different groups for different reasons. The founders in each case did not have an accurate idea of the size of the territories in question.

West Virginia broke away from Virginia during the Civil War. What we know as the Carolinas was originally a Spanish settlement before it became an English province. It became two states in 1792.

Part of NJ was originally a Swedish colony.

When a conservative tells you something, fact check it.
