One would say "The dinner i had yesterday."

(EDIT: and that would be a sentence fragment.)

No, that isn't a sentence fragment. However, it isn't standard English to use 'i' for the pronoun 'I'.

Set: I sure enjoyed that dinner.

Beth: Which one, sweetie pie?

Set: The dinner I had yesterday.

How does your scenario demonstrate that it isn't a sentence fragment, exactly?
