I wouldn't say that the interviews were a 'popularity contest' and I certainly do agree that personality fits are important. If you can't mesh with your co-workers, you're basically working alone, and nursing is teamwork.
Of course skills are important, but so are personality and work ethics. There's more to work than your smarts. We've all heard about doctors with a lousy bedside manner, right?
