Hi, would anyone know what is the syntactic function of the infinitive in this sentence?
They were know to be alone together.
I thought it might be a tough movement or a raised subject, but it does not seem so and nobody I asked is able to answer. Can you please help?

They were known to be alone together.

My vote goes to nominal infinitive functioning like a retained object. See here: http://www.towson.edu/ows/verbals.html
