Before he (went, had gone) to Greece, Dana did not speak a word of Greek.

All of the students (paid, had paid) their tuition before July.

Because Sheila (lay, had lain) on the beach all day in the hot sun, she had a terrible sunburn.



Could you give me the right choices and the reason why? When I see those sentences, both of the choices seem fine.

Went: He might still be there
Had gone: He might since have come back home

Same applies to Sheila and thew students. "Had" implies more elapsed time since the incident
