@spendius,
Prescriptive - Descriptive (Language)

Did you read the title, Spendius? You still don't understand what the two words mean. They are limited to their language meaning.

How can a guy who regularly flaunts his intelligence with quotes from all the right people be so bloody confused?

And it [prescriptivism - language] has been a spectacular failure. It was based on lies/god awful scholarship/social preening/... .

But I must note that it has fooled you.

I have no such need, Frank. I just call people out on their lies. You tried to make a pretense that you were being forthright and honest. Your reply in this post also illustrates that you are nowhere near that.

Actually, I think you do have such a need, JTT. You do it so often and to so many people...that is the only logical conclusion.

But as I said, I do not dislike you for it. I pity you.

This,

You construct your sentences, JTT, based on prescriptive methodology.

was your assertion, Frank. I can't understand how a top of the grammar/ vocabulary/English class guy like you can't even explain simple things about language.

I am sure there are lots of things you can't understand, JTT. You make that abundantly clear.

Keep at it, though. It might sink in.

@JTT,
What lies are you claiming to be calling out?

I do not understand your manner of proceeding. You just seem to insult everybody without giving the justification. A sort of invective scatter-gun.

You're like one of those dogs that bark at anybody who goes by.

But you know full well that one of those things is not the English language, Frank.

So now, [not Joe's 'so'] on top of lying, you add cowardice. What would your old grammar teacher think of you now, Frank?

Only truly ignorant people think ignorance is a measure of how much a person knows or doesn’t know.

Intelligent people realize that ignorance is as much a function of how a person acts and conducts himself…as it is of how much he or she knows.

JTT seems to know a lot…but the way he conducts himself shows a very ignorant person…one lacking even the common sense to be respectful of self…or for that matter, to pretend he has self-respect whether he has it or not.

Charity dictates that such a person be pitied.

Most of them would probably be impressed with me...although most are dead.

Coward is almost as frequent coming from you as liar. I doubt you'd use either word to most of us if you had to face us in person.

Now what would we call such a person????

666 said "Did you read the title, Spendius? You still don't understand what the two words mean. They are limited to their language meaning."

Isn't every word limited in that way?

What are you trying to say? I can't figure it out.

@Frank Apisa,
Finally, Frank, you address the question on language that you raised.

@Frank Apisa,
This is another of your dishonest tricks, Frank. Instead of addressing the language issue that you raised, you start whimpering and whining.

Hell, you seem to have even fooled Spendius and he has long been onto your dishonesty, having remarked on it many a time.

@Frank Apisa,
Finally, Frank, you address the question on language that you raised.

And given that this is obviously a part of your extensive education in English grammar, I'm sure that there isn't anyone who can't see your point.

Would you care to expand on your ideas of the workings of the English language?

I??? Whimpering and whining???

I do not do whimpering or whining. I'm just having a bit of fun at your expense.

Although in all seriousness, I do pity you. It must be horrible living the life you have to live.

That was whimpering and whining, Frank, meant solely to divert attention from the fact that you can't even explain your very own idea.

Caught yet again in your frequent dishonesty.

You're really not very bright, Frank. But then, I've long marveled at how you can so quickly contradict yourself. I don't know who is better at that, you, Setanta, Merry Andrew, ..., to name but a few.

Nope...no whimpering or whining that I can see in any of my posts. You are not reading your posts, are you? That could be the reason for the mix-up.

No dishonesty here...in fact, you didn't even point any supposed dishonesty.

I may not be bright, JTT...but I am not debating me. I'm debating you...and I think you are brilliant...although ignorant at the same time. I thank you for showing me how that can happen. I gotta acknowledge that I woulda bet against it.

So tell me...does it make more sense for me to debate someone I consider bright...or for you to debate someone you consider stupid?

You do remember the story of Alexander and Darius, right?

You do Oralloy's dog and pony show badly, Frank.

No dishonesty here.

Says Oralloy Jr.

Why are you diverting attention away from the fact that you aren't willing to address your own spurious contention, yet another contention that illustrates the poor grasp you have of the subject.

Oh, I'm not diverting attention away from the fact that I am unwilling to blah, blah, blah. What I am doing here, JTT, is giving you the chance to look as much the fool as possible.

I thought you woulda caught on to that by now...bein' as you are so bright and all that!

I pity you...but I love ya, Bro. You bring happiness, joy, and laughter into my life.
