I had blood drawn today. The woman that drew the blood wore gloves but then her assistant came to put the gauze and tape on and she was not wearing gloves. She said it was OK because she didn't touch the blood. Is this accurate? Is it OK not to wear gloves when putting gauze on after blood has been drawn? If not, what should I do?

@philb8791,
It wouldn't worry me a bit.

By the way, the gloves are to protect the operator from blood born pathogens.

@roger,
Yes, that's long been true - but now hospital workers can carry bacteria like clostridium difficile from patient to counter to patient. Or so I read.

It still doesn't worry me personally, as I am not immune deficient.
I hate the gloves, slimo city to wear them a lot, gah.

@philb8791,
As a nurse I would have to agree with both Roger and Osso.

The nurse / (assistant?) should have worn gloves.
The reason however is primarily for his or her protection.

As a patient I would encourage you to monitor hand washing of medical professionals. Statistically, poor hand-hygiene is where we medical professionals should do better.

Hands should be washed before and after any physical contact with a patient (whether wearing gloves or not).

Thank you for taking an active role in your healthcare.
If you ever have concerns about what any medical professional is doing. Ask them in the moment. We (medical professionals) all know (or should know) that you need to be informed of what is happening and why.
Very Happy

@MattDavis,
And if any one gives you flack about it throw around the term "informed consent".
That usually makes our ears perk up. Shocked
