New York itself was quite an adventure, so I’ll mention it here briefly. Linda and I bought a little house across the river in Millington, New Jersey. (No air-conditioning—big mistake.) So every day I was on the subway, dodging people, messenger bikes, you name it.

Does the author mean there was a lot of people and bikes on the roads after he got out of the subway?

@Nancy88,

he means it was crowded on the subway, and some people ("messengers") brought their bikes with them so they could make deliveries...

@Region Philbis,
Cool, the New York subway allows bikes to enter it. In some countries, bikes are forbidded to be taken to the subway.

You can bring bikes onto our train system in my city, but not during rush hour in the morning and evening. Bikes can also be hung on the front of buses.

@Region Philbis,
This is quite common on the island of Hawaii. They won't let you bring your bike on the bus but, for an extra $1 charge, you can secure it to the front. There's a special rack affixed to the front of the bus for just that purpose.
