I am studying gerunds now. And I am not sure if the word "crushing" in the following sentence is a gerund. If it is not, what part of speech is it?

"A tree fell in Melville, crushing the wood fence that surrounded the house."

Yes, crushing is the gerund.

Does it function as a noun? I believe it works as a verb, here.

As the result of its origin and development, the gerund has nominal and verbal properties. Here it has verbal properties.
