Wait a sec?! Coffee doesn't go there?!

Don't know about youse guys, but drinking coffee is an enema for me. Works better than any of those over-the-counter products used for that purpose.

I once read in an old medical book (c. 1925) that in cases where a person has swallowed a corrosive substance such as strong acid or caustic soda, and the stomach is perforated, or liable to become so, it is necessary to keep them awake and a coffee enema was recommended. To feed them later on "nutritive enemata" were recommended such as finely sieved soup. I guess nowadays these things can be done intravenously.

There was a fad for coffee enemas in the 1920s, they were supposed to be good for TB and for "cleansing" the gut; it seems to be undergoing a revival among "woo" medicine followers, like the fad for colonic irrigation, and is similarly foolish in the eyes of many medical practitioners. Dangers include internal burns if the coffee is too hot, sepsis from campylobacter, electrolyte imbalance, heart failure.

In fact enema fads of various kinds spring up with monotonous regularity. Last year (2012) a craze for drinking liquor up the arse ("ass" in the USA) was reported among American college students, who call it "butt chugging". Only in America.

You mean a laxative. (it works for me too.) "Enema" is the term for a dose of liquid that goes up your ass for various purposes, laxative or otherwise.

Well, listen, just be sure your enema liquid doesn't also double as an emetic.

Kinda reminds me of my last endoscopy and colonoscopy. The doctor was going to do both...one after the other. He had mentioned that he was using the same scope for both procedures.

Just before the anesthesiologist pushed the plunger I asked (difficult because of the contraption in my mouth to let the tube pass down), "You are going to do the upper first, right?"

He just smiled and said, "See ya in recovery, Frank!"

I never did follow up on the question later.
